At H&S we understand that organising coach hire can be a stressful process. Below we have listed a few important questions and answers to ensure you feel content booking with H&S.


This outlines the measures we take to ensure that all passenger transport operated by H&S is as safe as possible, and is in line with or exceeds guidelines laid down by  the government, and by the Confederation of Passenger Transport.



Customer Care


Is the company easy to contact?

The H&S office is manned throughout normal office hours and a telephone answering service operates when no-one is available to answer your call. We will respond as soon as possible to any message left. We also have an internet enquiry form and will respond just as quickly to all enquiries


Is the company helpful and knowledgeable when arranging bookings?

H&S will always endeavour to be polite and courteous. Our booking staff and managers have knowledge and experience of arranging tours and journeys throughout the UK and will be happy to help you with any of your transport arrangements.


The Drivers


Are all the drivers competent?

All H&S drivers hold a driving licence entitling them to drive any size of commercial passenger carrying vehicle. Periodically we physically check their driving licences and carry out verification checks with the DVLA. Practical driving ability is assessed on joining the company and annually thereafter.


Are the drivers appropriately trained?

The law now requires professional drivers to have completed 35 hours of professional competency training every five years. H&S has fully endorsed this requirement and has established its own in-house training program which provides quality, up to date training to all our drivers.


Are the drivers physically fit to drive coaches?

All of H&S’ drivers are fit to drive and do not suffer from any known medical condition which would prevent them from driving. We carry out annual eye sight tests on all our drivers.


Are the drivers appropriate for transporting children?

H&S’ coach drivers currently hold enhanced Disclosure Scotland Certificates. These will be replaced by the PVG scheme checks when expired in line with the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland Act 2007).


Will the driver be presented in company uniform?

All H&S coach drivers are expected to wear the uniform with which they are provided.


The Vehicles


Are the vehicles suitable?

H&S coaches are top quality and meet all Government safety specifications. We offer a range of vehicles with different seating capacities to meet your specific needs. We offer  16 – 51 seater coaches and a 78 seat double deck bus.


Are the coaches suitably equipped?

All H&S coaches are equipped with seatbelts, first aid kits, fire extinguishers and have air conditioning/forced air. Other facilities, such as toilets and/or refreshments are available as required.


Are the coaches in a legal and road worthy condition?

All H&S coaches are maintained to highest standard in our own workshop with support from the manufacturers and main dealers.


Does the company operate a preventive maintenance programme ensuring reliability and safety?

All H&S vehicles undergo regular time-based safety inspections, every 4 to 5 weeks or 4,000 KMs, whichever comes soonest. We have an annual test pass rate of 95% compared to the national average of 87%


Does a daily vehicle check take place before each vehicle is used?

Each H&S driver is required to undertake a full visual inspection of the vehicle before use. Any defects are brought to the attention of the company’s management for appropriate action.


Is written evidence kept of the checks?

Yes every H&S driver is issued with a pad of Drivers Walk Round Check Report Forms to record their checks and defects found. Nil reports are also required. A recording system is in place to ensure all defects are appropriately rectified.


Are the vehicles in a clean and safe condition?

Every H&S vehicle is washed and cleaned on its return to the depot after every days work. The depot in Hamilton has full coach washing and cleaning facilities. A system of periodic full valets is in place.


Is there a 24 hour breakdown procedure?

Yes. An H&S on-call manager can be contacted by drivers outside of office hours for advice about any issues. The manager can contact the duty technician ,who has his own 24 hour fleet support vehicle, or our breakdown contractor as appropriate to resolve any problems. The company has agreements with many fellow operators throughout the UK, who will provide assistance whenever and wherever possible.        


The Journey


Will the journey be planned with the safety and comfort of the passengers in mind?

H&S will plan the journey around the passengers needs and wishes, with breaks arranged to ensure the safety and comfort of the passengers. Our Operations Manager will double check travel times and arrange routes, breaks and timings to meet your needs and arrange our legal compliance requirements, allocating an appropriate number of drivers for the job.


Will the driver’s journey documents accurately reflect the customer booking?

H&S produce the driver’s work ticket from the information shown on the customers booking confirmation. It is important that the customer checks the confirmation documentation to ensure the company has the correct details for the trip.


Does the company analyse drivers’ records to check the drivers are being correctly allocated and remaining within the constraints of current legislation?

To comply with drivers’ hours regulations H&S have procedures to ensure legal compliance by our drivers. A computer based IT system is in place to automatically analyse each tachograph for any infringements.  It is our company policy that every journey is recorded on tachograph, whether or not legally required. We analyse 100% of tachograph records, with any issues being dealt with by our Compliance Manager.


The Company


British coach operators must satisfy VOSA that the company is professionally competent, of good repute and appropriate financial standing. Standard Operators Licences permit operations for ‘hire or reward’ and may cover National travel identified by blue windscreen discs. H&S holds a Standard National Operators Licence & an International Operators Licence,


Legislation requires that the company is controlled by a Transport Manager having continuous and effective responsibility for the operation – H&S have 2 effective Transport Managers, both holding Certificates of professional Competence .


Does the company have Vehicle Fleet Insurance?

H&S holds fleet insurance with Liberty Syndicates.


Does the company have Public Liability Insurance?

H&S has cover of £5 million provided by QBE.


Can the company demonstrate proven commitment to the highest levels of safety and comfort?

H&S has an impressive record within the coach industry and we are always trying to improve. A printout of the previous 12 months history from the government agency that oversees the industry’s safety record (VOSA) can be provided upon request.


Does the company welcome inspection visits by clients?

It takes a lot of preparation and back-room to ensure we can provide the very best service possible to our customers and passengers. H&S are very proud of the facilities and staff at our depot in Hamilton and very much welcome and encourage our customers to visit. Does the operator have any monitoring or audit processes in place?

H&S carry out continual compliance monitoring through the transport management structure and weekly compliance meetings of key managers to ensure the best standards.
